Quick answer

Marathon Rolls is a members-only session at the Sterling academy of Apex Jiu Jitsu & MMA, held on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays. Trial bookings do not include it, so new students take a free Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class first and join as members.

What it is

Marathon Rolls is a members-only session at the Sterling academy. Its name borrows jiu-jitsu's word for live, resisted sparring, rolling, the part of training that tests what you have been drilling.

It runs at the Sterling academy on Wednesday evenings for 60 minutes and on Saturdays for 90 minutes. In jiu-jitsu generally, live rounds build mat conditioning, give you time against different partners, and pressure-test techniques from recent classes.

The standards of every Apex class still hold. Sparring is optional, a tap ends every exchange, and control matters more than intensity.

Sterling trains both gi and No-Gi jiu-jitsu, so check with a coach about what to wear before your first Marathon Rolls session. Come ready to train: a full water bottle, a towel, clean gear, and trimmed nails. A long session is also the place where small habits add up, so arrive warm, pace yourself early, and take the rest you need between rounds.

Who it is for

  • Sterling members. Members-only classes have no published age restriction.

It suits members preparing for a tournament, members building cardio on the mat, and members who simply enjoy rolling. New students start in a regular class, where they are paired with an experienced partner who knows how to work with new students. In jiu-jitsu generally, the first months of live rounds are about staying calm under pressure, and that skill carries into every longer session.

How you join

  1. Start with a free jiu-jitsu class. New adults can pick the fundamentals class.
  2. Become a member. After the first class, the academy explains the membership options.
  3. See the schedule. Members find Marathon Rolls on the Sterling schedule on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays.

Rolling well for a long session is a skill of its own. Newer members tend to go hard in the first rounds and fade. Experienced members pace themselves, choose a mix of partners, and use lighter rounds to work on weak positions. The session rewards that kind of patience. Breathing through the nose, relaxing your grips between exchanges, and resetting to a neutral position when you are tired all help a round last longer. Drinking water before the session starts matters as much as the bottle you bring, because a long stretch of live grappling drains you faster than drilling does.

Questions about Marathon Rolls

What does rolling mean in jiu-jitsu?

Rolling is jiu-jitsu's word for live, resisted grappling. Two partners start from a set position or from the knees and each tries to reach a better position or finish a submission, while the other defends. The round ends when time runs out or someone taps, and a tap, two clear taps on the partner or the mat, stops everything instantly.

How long is a Marathon Rolls session?

The Wednesday evening session is 60 minutes, and the Saturday session is 90 minutes. Exact start times are on the Sterling class schedule. It is a members-only class with no published age restriction. Check the schedule before you go, since times can shift around holidays and events.

Do I have to roll every round?

No. Sparring is always optional at Apex, including at Marathon Rolls. Sitting out a round for water or rest is normal, and so is telling a partner about an injury before you start. Experienced partners go light with newer members by rule, and uncontrolled aggression is not tolerated on any mat.

Is Marathon Rolls the same as open mat?

They are separate entries on the Sterling schedule. In jiu-jitsu generally, open mat means unstructured training time and rolling means live sparring, and the schedule lists both sessions without a published format. Both are members-only, and neither is a place for a first class. If you are unsure which suits your week, ask a coach.
